Social Media; The Communication Tool of Our Generation

Social media is indeed the best and most effective tool of communication that is utilized by every one ever since online networking became a necessity in early 2000’s. The most popular social media websites that everybody uses today is widely dominated by Facebook and Twitter; everybody has an account.

Recently, a video regarding Joseph Kony, a warlord of Lord’s Resistance Army that abducts children, turning them into soldiers or sex slaves went viral.

The video played with viewers’ emotions; we experience warm fuzzy feelings at the birth of the narrator’s son, then we are slowly filled with anger and disgust with what Kony is doing. We even get goosebumps watching The Invisible Children’s efforts in spreading the Stop Kony 2012 Campaign.

With the power of Facebook and Twitter, the video was quickly shared, causing the Stop Kony 2012 to be an immediate trend among social media users.

Whether or not the whole campaign is a scam, we cannot deny that social media has got to be the most powerful communication tool nowadays. It is amazing how today, the Internet is using the Agenda Setting Theory in a whole new level.

New Media’s Impact on Society by James S. Gula

This article mostly informs us about the rapid changing in society including working environment, cultural changes and the publics. Basically, James S. Gula did mention a few important points on how new media such as The Internet, social networks and others affect and has changed the way we see others as well as the way we see the world.
In his article, he attempt to relate to the cultural changes that have taken place due to in good part to the technological advances, but more importantly the way in which new media is shaping our culture because of the transformation in which we receive our information. He will also express how new media can influence social appearance, values, and behaviors through the specific use of several new media channels and how marketing communication programs can leverage this phenomenon.
The enlightening piece that has opened his eyes to the changes in the mass communication was the explanation by Chris Anderson in his book, The Long Tail. He states that “the theory of the Long Tale is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of ‘hits’ (mainstream products and markets) as the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of segments in the tail” (Scott 18).
Apart from that, James S. Gula also mention that the new media in combination with enhanced technology has changed the way we see others as well as the way we see the world. The advent of the internet has opened a completely different profitability model that has influenced marketers into revamping the marketing strategy from mass appeal to a segmented approach. The content of websites needs to be divvied up accordingly by creating separate messages specifically designed for separate audiences within the media channel that it applies to. Therefore, each design in the websites must be segmented for different audiences so that the specific audiences recognize which messages are directed to them.
More and more people are turning into to the internet either to create a network, searching for jobs or even build and maintain their professional networks status of employment. For example, Linked-in and Facebook which has been growing at a rate of 200% a year. Goal seeking organizations can benefit from viral marketing communications programs. Viral Marketing is perhaps the most compelling of the new media channels in because of its alluring, compelling, and infectious nature.
To summarize, our society has been directly impacted through the new media channels created by the advancing information technologies. We as a society have become immune to a seemingly endless barrage of commercial messages that we endure from the moment we wake until the time we bed down for the evening from all media channels.

The blogosphere and public relations

New media is the one of the types of medium that public relation practitioner used most in order to disseminate information about the organization they belong to. According to many researches that being conducted many of the researcher agree that, World Wide Web among communication professionals has increased in the last few years, improving productivity and efficiency, two-way communication, research, and issues communication thereby enhancing management role enactment and perceived decision-making power. Thus, it is not something surprise when many public relations practitioner had used blogosphere as one of the medium to still connect to their audiences.
Many public relation practitioner had a false thought when they think that their publics will still interact with their official website rather that the blog itself. This is the wrong thoughts that many of the public relations make and will tend to neglect the blog itself. Supposed be, public relation practitioner should given this new and powerful medium for communicating with the public, it seems logical that public relations professionals would begin experimenting with blogs as a communication tool. In conclusion, blogs represent an opportunity for communication professionals like public relations practitioners to monitor less formal, word-of-mouth type of communication about their organizations or clients.

It consists of the blogging, Internet news services, writing for cross-media delivery, web publishing, multimedia news releases, and the used of interactive content. It involves public relations practitioner that need to move accordingly with the development of new media technologies in order to fulfill all the tasks demanded.
New media or modern technologies do give consequences towards the public relations practice both pros and cons. As taken and reviewed from the journal on “A Review of the Impact of New Media on Public Relations: Challenges for terrain, practice and education”, it stated that public relations practitioners are facing many kind of challenges in order to cope and move accordingly with the new media technologies. The challenges occur in the public relations job perspectives and their work performances.
For instant, PR practitioners will have more pressure in order to provide instant content, messages and updates to their targeted audiences that demand for immediate updates. They will also have strain relationship with their colleagues, senior staff and IT team due to the constraint when using the new media technologies. Thus, they need to form stronger alliances and engages with the organization’s legal advisers.
An organization may also get involve in ghost-writing a blog or flogging which means fake blogging when they need to grab the attention of the key audiences and fulfill the demands of new media technologies. Not only that, when an organization are very aware of the new media developments, they would not realize and consider the full implications of doing so (James).
In order to cope with the challenges they should have more technical skills, improve and get the extra knowledge on the usage of the new media if one wants to embrace the existence of the new technologies. Even though public relations practitioner are trying hard to adapt with the development of new media, they should consider the target publics either they have access to new media technologies or not.
