Social Media; The Communication Tool of Our Generation

Social media is indeed the best and most effective tool of communication that is utilized by every one ever since online networking became a necessity in early 2000’s. The most popular social media websites that everybody uses today is widely dominated by Facebook and Twitter; everybody has an account.

Recently, a video regarding Joseph Kony, a warlord of Lord’s Resistance Army that abducts children, turning them into soldiers or sex slaves went viral.

The video played with viewers’ emotions; we experience warm fuzzy feelings at the birth of the narrator’s son, then we are slowly filled with anger and disgust with what Kony is doing. We even get goosebumps watching The Invisible Children’s efforts in spreading the Stop Kony 2012 Campaign.

With the power of Facebook and Twitter, the video was quickly shared, causing the Stop Kony 2012 to be an immediate trend among social media users.

Whether or not the whole campaign is a scam, we cannot deny that social media has got to be the most powerful communication tool nowadays. It is amazing how today, the Internet is using the Agenda Setting Theory in a whole new level.

  1. Regarding Kony issue, I can say how bad the new media technology managed to influenced our thinking behavior. By using facebook as the new media approach, they gain much positive feedback which support their campaign and spreads the news about how to stop this Kony thingy. And have to admit, I myself one of these people who believed the news meanwhile it was a scam. And many of facebook users out there don't even know but they keep updating about Kony's video. I can say that, the new media has been successfully working as the main medium today where people take the adavantage of using it to spread some news easily and in just only few second to make the whole world know about it. Indeed, all these new media really influence the way we think about recent issues in the global world

  2. Yes it's true. Like our last discussion, how people believe in new media as to compared with traditional media. It's either the trending now or because the news spread faster than the traditional media. It is up to us to evaluate the truthfulness of the content.
